Celebration and Sorrow: Dido and Aeneas in Concert

  • Goshen College Rieth Recital Hall 1700 South Main Street Goshen, IN, 46526 United States (map)

Our 2024-2025 concert season, CYCLES OF LIFE, explores themes of death, resurrection, and the Earth. The season begins with our fall concert, Celebration and Sorrow: Dido and Aeneas in Concert. Written by Henry Purcell and based on Book IV of Virgil’s Aeneid, Dido and Aeneas tells of the love of Dido, Queen of Carthage, for the Trojan hero Aeneas, and her despair when he abandons her. The work includes one of the most iconic selections in all of classical music, Dido’s Lament. Solos will be sung by Camerata members, including mezzo-soprano Rebecca Dengler Kaufman as Dido and baritone Ben Ganger as Aeneas.

Rounding out the program will be another lament of Purcell’s, Hear My Prayer, O Lord, two of the celebratory Coronation Anthems by Georg Frideric Handel and a setting of Mary’s song or the Magnificat, by Italian composer Isabella Leonarda. Camerata will be joined by a period-instrument ensemble for an unforgettable evening of music-making in two stunning venues.

Please join us on Friday, October 11, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. in Rieth Recital Hall in the Goshen College Music Center or Saturday, October 12, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Elkhart.
